Just arrived - This 1947 MG Y-Type Tourer is a very rare car with some wonderful history. In the final years of Y-types production, a small number of cars were imported to Switzerland to be given cabriolet bodywork by various coachbuilders such as Reinbolt and Christé. This gave us the open four-seater tourer, which had been a popular notion before the war. The Y-Type tourer also received a 'TC' specification 1250cc 'XPAG' 4-cylinder with twin SU carburettors and more instrumentation than the other Y-Types. Only 904 of these cars went into production, and it would be a wonder to know how many came to Australia let alone how many are still in one piece. These MGY Tourers are incredibly rare and a wonderful piece of British automotive history. This Y-Type was purchased as a complete restoration project in 1973 for an anniversary present to the owner's wife, who is a family member of William Morris who founded Morris Garages. The project was undertaken over the next year or so by ex-Pininfarina coachbuilder, Johnny Pagnussat. It was restored to a beautiful original vehicle and still presents very nicely as an older restoration. It currently sits on a set of aftermarket rims to support a wider tyre, however, an original set does come with the car. It still runs a period-correct 1250cc and a 4-speed manual transmission. Since the completion of the resto, the car has been used for a limited amount of short trips and the occasional club run. While it has been consistently serviced, a busy life has limited its use and as such, it has only covered approximately 10,000kms since it was completed. The current owners have owned the MGY for the past 52 years, and it is time for someone else to love and enjoy it as they have. More photos to come!
