1954 Riley RME Sports Saloon 1.5 Ltr in great drivable condition, rust free and mechanically sound,
only 67,500 genuine miles on the clock.
I purchased this car five years ago from Collectable Classics who was selling it on behalf of a diseased estate, since been told by the Riley Club that it had only two previous owners. This car drives and performs extremely well. All parts that needed attention have been attended to, since owning it has been kept fully serviced and mechanically maintained.
Apparently the car was originally blue, it was resprayed its current colour in the early eighties and at that time was treated to a new headlining and black top.
Very smooth gear change, complete overhaul of gear box, all gears and synchromesh re-faced and re-machined.
The steering has been completely overhauled and repaired where necessary, no freeplay in rack and/or pinion.
Steering ball joints replaced were necessary.
Electrics in perfect working order, generator has undergone a recent rewind, contact brushes and bearing renewal.
Distributor rebushed and recent new points, plugs, leads etc. Easy starting.
Complete recent water pump new shaft, seals and bearings replacement.
Head and block refaced.
All valves recently ground and seated and new head gasket.
Much more has been done including rewiring of the steering shaft and a full rebuild of the centre steering hub trafficator (indicator) and high/low beam switch assembly’s.
New exhaust and Yokohama tyres fitted 3000 miles ago.
All instruments apart from the clock are in perfect working order, the clock has a minor problem and runs intermittently, probably a bad contact in the wiring connection.
Some of the instrument panel lights require attention, replacement and/or their contacts checked.
The Riley RME series was introduced in 1952 and were noted for their outstanding handling, torsion bar independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering offering a really comfortable level ride. The road holding is quite outstanding. The Riley RME included an open propshaft, hypoid axle, full hydraulic brakes and bigger rear window. Streamlined sidelights and the deletion of running boards and the introduction of rear wheel spats were features of the 1954 model.
This car is currently on Riley Club registration.
A lot of money has been spent on this car and should provide smooth trouble free running for many years to come, it comes with an original workshop manual. The asking price is $24,500, but I will consider all reasonable offers. Enquiries Ph 08 8339 5194.
